>   PRAYER FOCUS: MALAWI

On Saturday, 1st October, three school girls and a male teacher from Ekwendeni Girls’ Secondary School were drowned at Kande Beach in Nkhatabay District on Lake Malawi.  Several teachers and all Form 4 girls went to the lake to celebrate their graduation after completing their four-year programme.  The lake was rough, and the girls and the teacher who were bathing at the time, were carried away by the waves.  On Monday, 3rd October, a retired minister, Rev Watson S H Chavura, died at Ekwendeni Station after a week’s illness.  Please pray for the families, friends and colleagues of those who died.  Also pray for the continued food shortages in Malawi caused by lack of rain and high prices; that current needs would be met; and that a longer-term solution would be found.

>   WHITWORTH STUDENTS: Our American guests of last week want to thank everyone for their welcome and the way they were made to feel at home with us.  In particular they were given the luxury of home cooking which they had not had for over six weeks.  Thank you to all those who generously opened their homes, fed them, fitted in a tour of the local countryside and gave them an ice cream or two!  The students left on Tuesday morning for Galway but all said how much their time with Rosemary had meant to them.  Well done and thanks – Trevor Long
